BREAK: https://tab.stanfordusudc.org/usudc2018/

4/9/2018 at 10:18PM PDT: [BREAK NIGHT BANQUET]

We will be hosting a break night banquet on Sunday after Round 8. The banquet will take place in the beautiful McCaw Hall and Dwight Family Room in the Arillaga Alumni Center (a ~10 minute walk from GA). Buffet food will be served, and we will announce the break and present speaker awards. Formal wear is by no means required, but attendees are invited to dress formally if they would like to!

Since the banquet is a more formal meal than other meals at the tournament and is substantially more expensive for us to stage, squads interested in attending the banquet will need to purchase a $10/person tickets to partially offset the cost. Spots are limited. Buy tickets here, through EventBrite:

4/1/2018 at 8:45pm PDT: [TAB SITE AND TAB SCRATCHES]

The USUDC tab is now live at tab.stanfordusudc.org. Please let us know if anything looks incorrect. The front page of the tab website has a link to a form where you can declare conflicts. Final contingents were due March 30, so changes aren’t generally permitted. If some exceptional unforeseeable circumstance applies to you, you must immediately contact both the convenors and the tab directors. If you are one of the few remaining schools that has not completed individual registration, do this immediately!

3/29/2018 at 7:21pm PDT: [SCHOOLS THAT HAVE NOT YET COMPLETED INDIVIDUAL REGISTRATION]

If you are not sure how many of your teams and judges have completed individual registration, or how many we expect to fill out these forms, see the website’s registration status tool. If you need to adjust your registration, please email us as soon as possible.

3/28/2018 at 2:00pm PDT: [INDIVIDUAL REGISTRATION LIVE STATUS]

The number of teams and adjudicators from your institution that have completed individual registration can now be seen on the registration status tool. Individual registration is due March 30!

3/25/2018 at 2:00pm PDT: [INDIVIDUAL REGISTRATION DUE THIS FRIDAY]

Remember, team and adjudicator registration are due Friday! This means you must select teams and have them commit to attending this week, and they must fill out their registration forms before 23:59 PST, Friday, March 30.

It’s NOT okay to be a day or two late, and it’s NOT okay to submit placeholder information now to be confirmed later. You must have selected your FINAL squad early enough for you to meet the team and adjudicator registration deadline. Late changes are disruptive; please respect those with unforeseeable emergencies by reserving our bandwidth for them.

3/19/2018 at 2:23pm PDT [LAST HOTEL BLOCK EXPIRES TODAY]

Hi all, reminder that the final hotel block expires today. Once you book, please fill out the logistics tracking form for your school if you haven’t already to help us plan.

3/19/2018 at 4:36pm PDT: [IA UPDATE]

At this time, most IAs have been selected and notified by the CA team. Thank you all for your applications and enthusiasm to adjudicate at Stanford USUDC. We had a massive number of applications, and resource constraints unfortunately mean we cannot tap everyone – but we would if we could! Please email stanfordusu.ia@gmail.com for IA questions, NOT the general tournament email.

3/19/2018 at 4:34pm PDT: [RESIDENCE IN PALO ALTO/MOUNTAIN VIEW BLOCK EXPIRES TOMORROW]

Friendly reminder that the block discount at the Residence Inn by Marriott Palo Alto/Mountain View expires tomorrow! The remaining two block discounts (Residence Inn Palo Alto/Los Altos and Courtyard Palo Alto/Los Altos) expire on Friday (3/23). See hotels to book.

3/16/2018 at 1:39pm PDT: [WESTIN AND SHERATON BLOCKS EXPIRE TODAY]

Reminder that the Westin and Sheraton block discounts expire today! Discount blocks at the other hotels expire at various times next week.

3/16/2018 at 10:30am PDT: [INDIVIDUAL REGISTRATION DUE FRIDAY, MARCH 30]

Hello, everyone! I wanted to be clear about my expectations for team and adjudicator registration at USUDC 2018.

Team and adjudicator registration are due two weeks before the tournament starts, on Friday, March 30, at 23:59 PDT. I expect schools to have selected teams before then, early enough for debaters themselves to fill out the form before the deadline. This means that your debaters will need to commit to the tournament three weeks before it, and that societies who conduct trials need to do so within the next two weeks. Please advise your students/members and plan your activities accordingly.

I know this is further in advance than many schools are used to with local IVs. But this isn’t a local IV. In fact, on current numbers, it’ll be the second-largest BP debating tournament in the world—bigger even than EUDC. It’s also the national championship, and one that most of you are booking flights for. I hope you’ll agree that it’s reasonable to expect to know who’s coming two weeks before it begins.

You might be thinking—surely it won’t be an apocalypse if just one or two institutions drag their feet a tad? Two problems. First, everyone else is also thinking this, and the combined effect will collapse the tournament. Second, my week is busy with PhD life, so I set up tabs on weekends, and since I have another tournament April 7–8, I need to set up the USUDC tab on March 31. The March 30 deadline’s not a conservative date to allow for stragglers. It’s a real logistical constraint.

You might also be thinking—I’ll fulfill requirements if I just submit something, then tell the tab team changes later, right? Again, no. In a tournament of this size, all last-minute changes cause delays. It’s therefore imperative that we reserve this bandwidth for situations beyond our control, like family emergencies. The March 30 deadline isn’t just a submission deadline. I expect schools to know who will actually come by then.

Please don’t be the exception school. Plan ahead. Commit your teams early. Submit team and adjudicator registration for your finalized contingent by March 30.

3/13/2018 at 3:26pm PST: [REG STATUS TOOL INCLUDES PAYMENT STATUS]

The registration status tool has been updated to display the status of your school’s payment in terms of what we have received and processed.

3/13/2018 at 11:52am PST: [HOTEL BLOCK EXPIRY REMINDER]

Friendly reminder two of the hotel block discounts (at the Westin and Sheraton) expire this Friday, so if you are planning on staying at those hotels be sure to book your accommodation before then. The other hotel blocks last untill next Tuesday (Residence Inn/Mountain View) and Friday (all others).

Also, please fill out the logistics tracking form to help us plan after you book your hotels and flights!

3/12/2018 at 12:48am PST: [AMERICA’S CUP]

We’re looking for more America’s Cup teams! On March 10th we had 10 teams signed up, so we’ll keep accepting teams on a first-come-first-serve basis until the tournament is full. We’ll structure the tournament to a format that makes sense for the number of teams that are interested (if only 12, 2 prelim rounds then break to semis; if we get up to 16, we will run the original format).

3/10/2018 at 8:30am PST: [WAITLIST UPDATE]

We have just confirmed all teams that were waitlisted as of 6:00pm on March 10, 2018. This includes all teams from institutions that submitted institutional registration after the registration deadline, but before March 10 at 6:00pm. If you have forgotten how many teams your institution requested or seek clarity on your status, see the registration status tool. We have also added the number of confirmed judges from your institution to the tool. If something on this tool looks incorrect, email us.

All institutions with waitlisted teams should have received an email to their listed institutional contact from the tournament email address confirming that their waitlisted teams have been accepted. If your institution requested an invoice for your original set of teams, we have automatically provided an invoice for the additional teams and judges that are now confirmed. If you have not received an invoice but require one, email us at stanford.usudc@gmail.com and we would be happy to provide it.

The tournament is now at 237 teams. Any additional teams requested by schools which have already submitted institutional registration, or institutions registering for the first time, will have their teams put on the waitlist.

We are looking forward to seeing you in Palo Alto! As always, we would be happy to help you with any questions you may have at stanford.usudc@gmail.com.

3/9/2018 at 11:47am PST: [HOTEL BOOKING LINKS ARE LIVE]

Hotel booking information and links are live on the hotels page.

3/9/2018 at 11:35am PST: [LOGISTICS TRACKING FORM]

After you have booked your hotels and flights, please complete the 2018 USUDC Logistics Tracking Survey to help us plan our logistics provision during the tournament.

3/9/2018 at 12:31am PST: [TENTATIVE SCHEDULE POSTED]

The schedule page has been updated with a tentative schedule. The outside staples of this timetable (the time of the first round each day, the team drop deadline on Saturday and Sunday, and the start time for the Open Final) are fixed. The internal components of this schedule are subject to change.

3/7/2018 at 6:00pm PST: [HOTEL UPDATE]

Hotel booking links, information, and booking instructions will be released on the tournament Facebook page, BP in North America, and the tournament website by the end of the day this Friday (March 9th). Thank you for your patience on this front.

3/7/2018 at 6:00pm PST: [IA DECISIONS UPDATE]

The CA team is making IA funding offers in waves. The first wave has already gone out; the second wave will probably go out this weekend. Future waves are tba, because they depend on the acceptance rate from previous waves and fluid components of the tournament budget.

3/7/2018 at 6:00pm PST: [WAITLIST ALLOCATION UPDATE]

We think it is likely that at least some teams will be admitted off the waitlist, and we think it is likely that a first round of waitlist allocations will occur this weekend. (But, full disclaimer, this is not yet an official stance). For your live waitlist status, see the registration status tool.
